Urology

Urology is a surgical specialty, covering the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra, and prostate, including male reproductive organs.

Kanad Hospital’s Urology Department offers its services through Dr. Magdy Girgis Sorial, who has over 10 years of experience. Both our urologists are trained in open and endoscopic urological surgeries and are expertly trained in the use of shock wave lithotripsy as a treatment for stone disease.

If you would like to book an appointment with our urologists, please call 03 713 1111.

Renal Stones

Renal stones form when chemicals in the urine become concentrated to the point that they form solid crystals. Larger stones may become lodged in the urinary tract, causing pain, blockage, or infection.

The majority of such renal stones – depending on their size and location – can be removed with non-surgical techniques such as shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). Kanad Hospital has so far carried out over 400 successful lithotripsy procedures within 2 years.

How is it diagnosed?

Several tests are used to look for kidney stones, including plain abdominal X-ray, ultrasound, intravenous urography, or CT scan.

How is it treated?

Kanad Hospital has a modern extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) suite and offers it as a non-surgical option for kidney stones. ESWL is a noninvasive technology that uses high-energy shock waves to destroy renal (kidney & ureteric) stones. The stones are broken into small particles which can then pass through urine.

The procedure takes usually less than one hour and patients are generally discharged from the hospital in a short while after the treatment. This procedure is an outpatient procedure without anesthesia. It can treat stones in all age groups, including children.

Not all renal stone patients are good candidates for ESWL. Our urologists will work with you in deciding the best mode of treatment for your renal stone problem.
