Maternal Fetal Medicine

Kanad Hospital offers Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) services for high-risk pregnancies. Our obstetricians and perinatologists specialize in prenatal care of mothers who are at risk of complications during and after pregnancy.

Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine Consultants Dr. Ali Al Ibrahim and Dr.Fayez Nasrallah help to ensure that your baby has the best start in life. They identify problems early in pregnancy, explain the situation to the parents, offer medical intervention if possible, and provide counseling to the parents about their child’s condition. Depending on the situation they will involve neonatologists, pediatric cardiologists, or other specialists to ensure care is effectively coordinated before the child is born.

Why were you referred to maternal-fetal medicine?

Your primary care physician may refer you to a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist when you are diagnosed with a medical condition that could affect your fetus or scheduled delivery. Some women are also asked to visit the specialist even before they get pregnant to ensure they manage their risks through healthy eating plans, medications, and weight loss. There are also cases when the doctor finds out a fetal anomaly or a problem with the baby’s development inside the mother’s womb. This is a critical sign to consult your perinatologist.

What makes a woman have a high-risk pregnancy?

  • Pre-existing health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, or lupus
  • Obesity
  • Teen pregnancy (19 years old or below)
  • Advanced maternal age (35 years old or older)
  • Multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, or more)

What is the difference between MFM and OB/GYN?

A Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist strictly focuses on the medical conditions of the mother and her fetus during a complicated pregnancy, while an OB/GYN (obstetrician/gynecologist) is a doctor who specializes in the general care of a woman’s reproductive health, including pregnancy, delivery, birth control, and menopause. Both MFM and OB/GYN providers have been trained in obstetrics and gynecology, but MFM specialists completed additional years of training to handle high-risk pregnancies.

What happens at your first MFM appointment?

At your first Maternal-Fetal Medicine appointment, your doctor will review your medical records and history, any prenatal lab tests, and family history, if deemed important. The consultation may also require an ultrasound to assess your unborn baby and the overall health status of your pregnancy.
