Pre-Surgery

While it is not mandatory to have a referral to see a general surgeon, patients needing surgery should first consult with a physician. A physician can help determine which surgeon you should schedule a consultation with. You can find highly trained and experienced Primary care physicians here.

During Surgery

Inside the operating room, a surgery team is made up of professionals who work together to make sure the procedure goes smoothly and the patient is safe from risks. The team usually consists of the following:

  • Lead Surgeon – the doctor who leads the operation
  • Surgeon’s assistant – assists the lead surgeon
  • Anesthesiologist – administers medication so the patient will not feel any pain
  • Nurses – assist the doctors
  • Surgical technologist – sets up the tools and equipment needed

Post-Surgery

Following any surgical procedure, a specialized team is available for necessary post-operation care. Recovery in the Special Care Unit or Inpatient Department of the hospital will take place under the close supervision of the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and nurses.

Some insurance plans require a referral from a doctor. Check with your insurance plan provider for details.
