Family & Internal Medicine

Medical terms vary depending on which country you come from. Kanad Hospital works on an American system where:

  • Family Medicine practitioners are Board Certified* doctors who have specialized in general practice for ages 0-99 years old. This is what most British People would call a GP.
  • Internal Medicine practitioners are also Board Certified* specialists but they only treat adults

At Kanad Hospital, most insurance plans allow you to make an appointment directly with a doctor from Family or Internal Medicine. During a medical service, you can choose between a male or female doctor, whoever makes you feel more at ease. You can also request the doctor you are most comfortable with.

When should you visit a family medicine doctor?

Your family doctor is considered your primary care physician. This means you need to see your doctor whenever you or someone in your family:

  • is having a fever;
  • needs medication for chronic conditions like diabetes, arthritis, and hypertension;
  • requires undergoing a prenatal check-up;
  • has been in a minor injury;
  • is having mental health issues,
  • is due for an annual health check-up; or
  • needs a laboratory test and physical examination.

We recommend visiting your doctor at least once a year for a complete check-up to ensure you and your children are in excellent health.

What is an internal medicine doctor responsible for?

An internal medicine specialist and a family medicine doctor are both primary care physicians. However, internal medicine doctors, also called internists, specialize in adult medicine. They are responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of adult disorders and diseases, such as:

  • General malaise
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Back pain
  • Infections
  • Dermatitis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Abdominal pain
  • Heart disease
  • Acute bronchitis
  • Other illnesses in adults
