Anesthesia

Kanad Hospital handles the delicate needs of surgical teams whenever sedation and anesthesia are required. Our operating rooms feature advanced technology for administering various types of anesthetics. On top of that, we have a team of experienced anesthesiologists trained in different fields, such as pediatric, cardiac, transplant, and neuro anesthesiology. These healthcare providers can decide which type of anesthesia should be rendered depending on the medical procedure and patient.

Who needs anesthesia services?

Anesthesia is administered to prevent patients from feeling pain during the surgery and any painful medical procedure. Any patient who will undergo a major operation needs anesthetic drugs. However, there are other cases wherein anesthesia is also an option. This includes getting wound stitches, dentistry, warts removal, childbirth, and some non-surgical procedures.

What do anesthesia services usually include?

A typical anesthesia service involves a physician anesthesiologist administering an anesthetic drug, either by injection or inhalation. For major operations, a preoperative medical assessment is required to determine risk factors and the patient’s functional capacity to undergo surgery. A postoperative visit and consultation, on the other hand, are offered after an anesthesia procedure when applicable. The service also takes into account monitoring the patient’s body temperature, blood pressure, ECG (electrocardiogram), and the proper administration of fluids and blood among others.

Types of anesthesia

At Kanad Hospital, we have world-class anesthesia specialists who use anesthetics depending on the scope of the medical procedure. The most common types of anesthesia include:

  • General anesthesia

This type is for patients undergoing invasive surgeries, such as the removal of the appendix, biopsy, cataract surgery, Cesarean procedure, and any operations dealing with the abdomen, head, heart, and internal organs.

  • Regional anesthesia

As its name suggests, regional anesthesia only numbs a specific area of the body. It is highly preferred for patients undergoing orthopedic surgery, operation on reproductive and urinary organs, and during labor and childbirth.

  • Local anesthesia

Unlike regional anesthesia which numbs a large part of the body, local anesthesia affects only a small area of tissue. This type of treatment is commonly used in tooth extraction, skin biopsy, stitching a deep wound, and treating painful mouth ulcers or sore throats.

  • Sedation

Sedation is a type of pain control used for less complex medical procedures. Its goal is to relax the body and unlike general anesthesia, the patient does not have to become totally unconscious. This treatment is usually administered before a dental procedure, endoscopy, colonoscopy, and other minor surgical procedures.

What to expect when you're under anesthesia?

Once the anesthesia is working, your body functions will slow down. Under general anesthesia, you will become unconscious and will not be able to respond to any kind of pain as this affects the whole body. On the other hand, when you are undergoing regional or local anesthesia, you may still feel movement and pressure but will lose sensation in the treated area of your body. While with a sedation treatment, you will feel drowsy and nearly unconscious. An anesthesiologist will be responsible for making sure that your vital signs are normal throughout the procedure.
