Kanad Hospital Clinical Genetics Clinics provide healthcare for children and adults with confirmed or suspected genetic diseases. We provide clinical evaluation, perform genetic and metabolic tests, advise on management, and do genetic counseling for patients and families.

The genetic evaluation aims to identify the genetic causes of diseases which can help in providing knowledge about the disease and its prognosis, guiding management planning, understanding the inheritance and recurrent risk, and applying prevention.

Among the numerous genetic and inherited conditions that this service provides care for are:

  • Developmental delay and intellectual disability
  • Behavioral disorders including autism and hyperactivity
  • Birth defects and congenital malformations
  • Down syndrome and other chromosomal and genetic syndromes

Why would you be referred to Clinical Genetics?

Clinical Genetics is the medical specialization involving comprehensive diagnostic, counseling, and therapeutic services for patients with genetic conditions. If your doctor refers you to a clinical genetics clinic, it means you may have or are at risk of a genetic disorder or disease. The common disorders include down syndrome, autism, late Alzheimer’s disease, and cystic fibrosis, among others.

What happens at a clinical genetics appointment?

Just like a typical doctor’s appointment, a clinical geneticist will review the patient’s medical history and what brought him to the clinic in the first place. This will include asking questions about his previous diagnosis and family history as well. In some cases, additional laboratory tests may be required, such as testing urine and blood samples. After the physical examination and medical assessment, the doctor will explain the findings and provide available options to manage the condition. At times, the medical geneticist may recommend further evaluation or a follow-up appointment.
