What happens at a cardiology appointment?
Your cardiologist will review your medical history and then you will be required to complete a physical examination. For further assessment, your doctor may also order diagnostic testing, such as an Electrocardiogram (ECG), a stress test, Echocardiogram, blood tests, and even an X-ray. Other tests will be required to get the most accurate diagnosis and to come up with the best treatment plan based on lab results.
When should you go to a cardiologist?
- You are referred to see a cardiologist.
When your primary care doctor notices a red flag but could not be so sure, he will recommend having your heart checked by a cardiologist, a doctor specializing in cardiovascular conditions. In special cases, babies and children diagnosed or suspected of heart problems should be examined by a pediatric cardiologist.
- You have a personal or family history of heart disease.
Some cardiovascular conditions are hereditary. If you have been experiencing symptoms of an underlying heart problem and somebody from your family tree has been diagnosed before, then you should take action and visit a heart specialist.
- Your blood pressure has always been high.
When you have uncontrolled blood pressure, you are certainly at risk of serious heart disease. Talk to a heart expert and do not ignore this symptom.
- You have other conditions that make you at risk of heart failure.
If you have key risk factors or another condition that can lead to heart failure, you should see a cardiologist. For instance, patients suffering from diabetes or born with congenital heart disease should consult a heart doctor.
